How to Be There for a Pregnant Mama

By Your Cheeky Maternity Photographer

1) You see a pregnant mama in the grocery aisle and think, “Awwww, I miss those days.” You find yourself wondering how far along she is and what gender the baby is. She is starting to get closer, leaning into her cart a little more than normal. Just when you have the urge to ask these questions, you pause and instead say, “Wow, you are beautiful,” then carry on with your grocery shopping.

2) You just had your baby and you are all full of amazing hormones that make you sway when you hear a baby cry. You are now a stay-at-home-mom and are filled with the joy of this miracle that brought life into the world. You see another mama, who is clearly pregnant, and you want to share your birth experience with her. Every single detail. Just when you have the urge to tell her everything, you pause and instead say, “Wow, you are beautiful,” then carry on about your day.

3) You are at Starbucks waiting in line for your delicious quad espresso over ice. You glance over to see a pregnant woman ordering a coffee, and ‘gasp’ she did not order decaf. You want to remind her what you read on the ever reliable internet about caffeine and pregnancy. Just as she gets close to you in line to pick up her drink, you pause and instead say, “Wow, you are beautiful.” With a smile, you send a kind, knowing nod toward her then get your coffee and go about your day.

4) You are at a restaurant eating your dinner, and a pregnant woman is right next to you eating with her partner. You are an advocate for home birth and natural birth. Your curiosity is starting to itch away at you for an opportunity to ask this pregnant woman if she plans to have a natural birth or c-section. Just as you finish your bite of food, you smile to get her attention, then lean over to say “WOW, you are beautiful.”

Tell any woman she is beautiful any time of day, regardless of any decision she is making or not making. This is how you can support a pregnant woman, a mother-to-be, with four amazing words.
