I Didn’t Think You Were Listening
Thoughts from your, Seattle Family Photographer
Part of my job as a Seattle Family Photographer is to listen. I need to listen to the needs of the client to determine if I can meet their photographic needs. Once we meet, I listen to their likes and dislikes and try to pick up on the nuances of their personality and relationship dynamics so those can be portrayed in their images. I listen in order to provide services and to make my clients happy. I believe they’re worthy of my time, and I hope that they value mine as well. I hope they listen to my advice in the preparation of our time together so that their shoot goes as smoothly as possible.
To be honest, our world hinges on listening. Any relationship- business, parent, friend, significant other- is forged or broken based on our ability to hear and be heard. There are consequences to not listening, not hearing what others have to say to us. There are additional consequences when we fail to recognize that others are listening.
My friend loves to channel a Mad TV skit. It’s a playful way she expresses her frustrations, and it’s pretty funny. She laughs, and whoever she’s talking to laughs with her. Laughter is the best medicine, right? One day, her four- year-old repeated one of the phrases. It was one of those things that are hysterical when an adult repeats it but could get a kid kicked out of preschool. She didn’t think he was listening to her phone conversations. But he was, and now, there’s a phrase taken out of context that would send other mothers screaming to the hills if her child repeated it to another kid.
I didn’t think you were listening.
We work so hard to listen, to be good listeners that we forget those around us may be listening when we least suspect it. Whether it’s a stranger overhearing how we speak to the store clerk, or our child memorizing our phone conversations, someone is always going to be influenced by our words. So let’s work to choose them wisely. Damned if you do, damned if don't.
Parenting is hard.
Please enjoy this sweet in-home family photography session. This family was so much fun and a blessing to have had the opportunity to photograph

Seattle Family Photography and Maternity Photography All in One!
The sun finally came out. What seemed to be an endless winter turned slowly and gracefully into spring. I met this family at the Olympic Sculpture Park for their Seattle family photography session and I was excited to be able to see our shadows! The sun was out in all its glory.
While it is hard to ignore how stunning this family is, their personalities made me want to take them home with me. One of my favorite things about my job is all the amazing people I meet.
I am still me.
One gift of being born with a cleft lip is we, at a very young age, realize we are not defined by our beauty, flaws, age, or outward appearance.
I think the old adage is "Don't judge a book by its cover."
For those who follow my blog, you know I did not have any friends in Middle School or High School. Kids are brutal, and they sometimes grow up to be brutal adults. I was recently overlooked because of my weight. Yep, I have recently put on some extra *cough* 20 *cough* pounds (and no, I am not pregnant.) I just stopped worrying about my diet and worked on remodeling my new home. I could only put so much on my plate and gained some weight. The weird thing is - I'm not even mad about it. I am still me. Under this fluff, is me. Still me. I am the same person with priorities that were adjusted for 3 months which granted me these extra pounds. I am not embarrassed about it. I am proud of it. I worked my ass off...err ON... on my new home, which looks amazing, I should add.
And when I lose these extra pounds, I will still be me. I will be the same person. Only with one less jerk in my life. So thank you for thinking my extra weight made me less of a person to you; because I am able to be more of a person for the people who know I am still me. With or without 20 extra pounds.
Something needs to change in this world. How we treat people as less than. How we see people as beneath us. People are just people.

If you live here- you are living through it.
With our 9th consecutive day of rain this month, and well, all the other rain that's fallen this autumn and winter, Seattle has received more than 37.50" of rain since October 1. We have gotten a full years worth of our average rainfall in 5.5 months. It has been intense. We noticed when the sun and came out and we saw our shadows for the first time in months. (this is a thing). Thankfully this year has been a busy year and I had yet to notice until these fantastic and sweet clients of mine got rescheduled twice due to rain!
Your Seattle Family Photographer got Creative!
It was time for an indoor solution to an obviously wet winter. They wanted some images with the great Seattle outdoors - after all, they came here for a job at Amazon and they wanted to capture this chapter in their lives. On our third attempt to schedule, we decided on a Ferry Ride rain or shine! Thank goodness because it rained!
“There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.” ― John Lennon
Have an open heart and embrace what life and weather bring you - and don't forget to splash in all the puddles.
